As I write this, I'm preparing for a long weekend away with friends. I'm taking a few hours off from work to hop an early flight to where longtime friends are gathering at a lake. Several months ago, my husband and I took a long weekend trip to the beach sans kids to celebrate six months at my new job and the end of a long coaching season for him.
The benefits of these short trips are numerous. The mental break of being away from household chores and grocery lists is always a treat! The time spent on relationships with fellow travelers always reaps huge benefits. And the impact on finances, work and scheduling is usually less than a weeklong adventure.
Sometimes, the travel component is not even required. Every fall, I take a day off to spend with my mom right here at home. We may shop, see a movie, go out to eat or take a long walk. It's become an annual tradition and something we look forward to after the chaos of school has settled.
So, as we all head into this busy time of year, look at your calendar and see if there is a point that will allow for a long weekend, at home or away. Set aside this time to enjoy the benefits that this will provide for you and your loved ones.
