Emma Grey's debut novel The Last Love Note will most likely be one of my favorite books in 2025. It touches on the themes of grief, love, self discovery and second chances with a healthy dose of humor. I fell in love with the main character, Kate, a young widow and single mom. The book brings the reader on her journey as she tries to move forward while still healing from an enormous loss.
The book begins two years after Kate's husband, Cam, passes away, but it does a bit of time travel to the past throughout the novel. Grey masterfully balances her storytelling in the present and past, and avoids the frustration I sometimes experience while reading stories that switch back and forth repeatedly, but that was not the last with The Last Love Note. Kate is still rebuilding her life personally and professionally when she travels with her boss, Hugh, for business. An in-flight issue has Kate and Hugh stuck for a weekend on the beautiful east coast of Australia. During this time, Kate is able to reflect on her marriage, motherhood and friendships while coming to terms with how she can take the next best steps.
Grey's exquisite writing and storytelling had me consumed in Kate and Cam's story and tragedy, but also deeply invested in the present. While on the trip, a secret between Kate and Hugh threatens their friendship. It takes left behind notes, a open heart and a good dose of courage for Kate to make sense of the present and consider a second chance at love.
