Raising teenagers is quite fun. They are inquisitive, funny and clever. But, this stage presents its own challenges just like the newborn and toddler phases.
Lisa Damour's Untangled: Guiding Teen Girls through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood is a practical, applicable and thought-provoking book that empowers parents on how to best understand, support and guide their teenage daughters through the struggles of growing up and becoming young adults.
Damour is a practicing psychotherapist who uses her knowledge and experience to explain in great detail specific situations during these transitions. Humor, facts and statistics are weaved throughout the book.
Each chapter focuses on the challenges young girls face such as leaving childhood and partnering with adulthood, contending with authority, romance and sexuality and caring for herself. At the end of each chapter, Damour includes a section called "when to worry," which is extremely helpful to parents. It aids us in identifying when a behavior or incident isn't typical and requires more attention such as professional intervention.
As a mom of teenage daughters, I highly recommend this book to parents of tweens and teen girls. It will equip you with the knowledge of what you can expect in the years ahead and how to handle all the strands and remain untangled.
