Tuesday Morning Tidy: 12 Months of Tidy - Kitchen/Bath Part 2

Writer: FayFay

Earlier this month, I covered the clearing, cleaning and repairs for our kitchen and main floor bathroom. That post was on the first of my three-step process:

  1. Serious clear, clean and repair.

  2. Assess how we use the space for making improvements.

  3. Identify ways to maintain it more easily going forward.

I washed all the fabrics in the kitchen, including runners and kitchen towels. The non-toxic oxy clean I used really brightened all of our dishcloths, and I'll continue using this to keep our whites a little brighter. Highly recommend!

Unfortunately, the ice maker was not such a simple solution. The repair was about half the cost of the fridge, which is already five years old. Since this is the second time we've had to repair the ice maker, we may just live with a more manual ice solution.

Assess for Improvements:

There are a number of improvements I've made in the last week.

  • I added a small selection of toiletries to our downstairs bathroom so we're not running up and down to get things that we use more frequently.

  • By emptying a drawer full of toddler dishes, we now have room to store all of our reusable food containers. It's been a helpful update!

  • We love to snack but could use some smaller reusable bowls. I added these to our collection of Corelle glass dishes (which I love).

Maintenance:

In our frequently used kitchen, it's not uncommon to need replacements for worn or broken items. This month, especially after tossing all of those plastic cutting boards and serving utensils, I've purchased the following replacements:

  • Cutting Boards--These are non-plastic and dishwasher safe! I have several and needed a larger version.

  • Silicone Serving tools

  • Every six months, I replace the filters in our coffee pot, water pitcher and refrigerator. This keeps things smelling and tasting fresh!

In the bathroom, there wasn't much to replace, but I did a thorough restocking of essentials including toilet paper, hand soap, and cleaning supplies.

These are heavily used spaces, and it's always good to give them a little love!
