Tuesday Morning Tidy: Fall Capsule Wardrobe Update

Updated: Nov 22, 2020

In a previous post, I shared the basics for creating a Capsule Wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe consists of 25-50 clothing pieces, and a small collection of shoes and accessories. Capsules are a wonderful way of streamlining your wardrobe to include only pieces that you love, fit well and coordinate with other items in your closet.

I am now several years into the development of my capsule wardrobe, and I've done a pretty good job of training myself to buy higher quality, but far fewer, items. I start each season with a list of key staple articles that need to be replaced or purchased to round out my seasonal capsule. Then I might add a trendy top or new accessory as needed.

My current fall/winter wardrobe consists of 48 pieces (not including athletic and outerwear), and I’ve included links to favorite staples where possible. I concentrate on navy, black, gray and camel whenever I'm purchasing for the long term. In reviewing my wardrobe for this post, I was surprised how many more pieces I own for the fall and winter (compared to 35 for spring/summer), and I think it's because I enjoy the styles so much!

  • Tops - 15, This includes turtlenecks and blouses, a mix of casual and work-appropriate, solids and patterns, but I am most often wearing these with a cardigan or vest over.

  • Skirts - 5 (2 camel, black, brown, plaid) My favorite style is the sidewalk skirt from J. Crew Factory.

  • Sweaters - 4 (2 fair isle, black, navy)

  • Cardigans - 5 (black, navy, pink, gray, red) My favorites are this one and this one.

  • Vests - 2 (blue, navy)

  • Sweatshirts and pullovers - 3 (gray, cream/red stripe, blue) My favorite is from L.L. Bean similar to this.

  • Work Dress - 2 (black wool, ponte)

  • Blazers - 5 (2 navy, red, black, tan)

  • Jeans - 2, all season (dark wash, medium wash)

  • Corduroys - 1 (gray)

  • Pants - 4 (2 black, tan, navy) My favorite are these.

Shoes

Just a note that not a single pair of these shoes is newer than two years old. I can personally attest to the value if you are able to make a small investment in a quality, timeless pair!

Bags

I didn't share my purse situation in the spring post, so I thought I'd share a few of my favorite bags. I only use a handful throughout the year, and these have all proven themselves over several seasons.

Shopping List

I have just two things on my fall list to add to my capsule.

  1. Dudley Stephens Park Slope fleece. I'm hoping this one returns in the light pink color. I think it would look great with navy or black pants for work, or jeans on the weekend.

  2. Rothys - I could not decide between the pointy and the rounded flat. I waited long enough that I don't have to! I'm hoping to add the new square toe to my shoe lineup this fall.

I'd love to know if you maintain a Capsule Wardrobe, and if so, what new items you're adding this season! Subscribe for future organizing, simplifying and streamlining tips!
